One of the World's Best Shark Dives

The Shark Reef Marine Reserve at Beqa Lagoon is not just Fiji's best shark dive — it is consistently ranked among the top five shark dive experiences in the world. The reserve was established in 2004 through a conservation partnership between local villages and dive operators, creating a protected area where sharks have been fed and habituated to divers over two decades. The result is extraordinary: predictable, close-up encounters with multiple shark species in clear, warm Pacific water.

The species present include bull sharks, tiger sharks, sicklefin lemon sharks, tawny nurse sharks, whitetip reef sharks, blacktip reef sharks, silvertip sharks, and grey reef sharks. On a typical dive, you will see multiple species simultaneously. Sharks of this size (bull sharks commonly reach 2.5–3 metres) in this density are found very few places in the world where recreational divers can access them safely.

Conservation note: The Shark Reef Marine Reserve is a genuine conservation success story. Local villages receive income from the dive tourism, making sharks economically valuable alive — creating a powerful incentive for protection. The reserve has seen shark populations increase significantly since its establishment.

Do You Need Dive Certification?

Certified divers get the most from this experience — the main shark dive takes place at 10–30 metres depth. However, snorkelling options are available for non-certified participants, and intro dives (supervised shallow water dives with no prior certification needed) can be arranged with advance notice. Contact tourfijitours.com when booking to discuss your diving experience level.

What to Expect on the Dive

The dive follows a structured protocol developed over 20 years. Divers kneel on the reef at approximately 20–25 metres in a specific formation while the shark feeders (experienced professionals in chain mail) manage the feeding sequence. Sharks approach from multiple directions. The close encounters are controlled and predictable — this is not a random encounter in open water but a managed, professional operation with a strong safety record.

Two dives are typically included: the main shark dive and a second dive at a different site in Beqa Lagoon where you'll see reef species and the resident population of smaller sharks without feeding. Between dives, lunch is served on the boat.

Is It Safe?

With over 20 years of operation and thousands of divers, the Beqa shark dive has an excellent safety record. The protocols are well-established, the guides are experienced, and the sharks — while genuinely wild animals — behave predictably within the context of the regular feeding program. Incidents are extremely rare. This is not a thrill-seeking reckless experience — it is a professional, conservation-oriented operation that happens to be one of the most extraordinary things you can do underwater.
