What Is Cloud 9?
Cloud 9 is one of the most distinctive experiences in all of Fiji — a two-level floating platform moored above a coral reef in the Mamanuca Islands, roughly 45–60 minutes by boat from Port Denarau. It has an internationally stocked cocktail bar, an Italian wood-fired pizza restaurant, snorkelling directly from the platform into pristine reef below, sun decks, day beds, and a quality sound system with rotating DJ sets.
The concept is simple and brilliant: take everything great about a beach bar and put it in the middle of the ocean. The result is unlike any other experience in Fiji — or frankly anywhere. It's social, beautiful, relaxed, and completely unique. Instagram and TikTok have made it famous; the platform's distinctive appearance and the surrounding turquoise water photograph extraordinarily well.
Why it sells out: Cloud 9 has limited capacity and is massively popular with the AU/NZ market. Weekend spots during dry season (May–October) sell out weeks in advance. Book as early as possible.
What Happens on the Day
You're picked up from your Nadi or Denarau hotel and transferred to Port Denarau Marina. The boat departs at either 9am (full day) or 1pm (half day) and takes around 45–60 minutes, cruising through the Mamanuca Islands. Arriving at Cloud 9, you step onto the lower deck — the snorkel zone — and can immediately jump into the water above the reef below. The reef is directly beneath the platform and easily accessible.
The FJD $60 bar tab included in the price (roughly AU$40) goes towards cocktails, beer, wine, or soft drinks at the bar. Wood-fired pizzas are available for purchase — vegetarian, meat, and gluten-free options. The platform has multiple levels: lower deck for water access, main deck for dining and socialising, upper sun deck for panoramic views.
Is Cloud 9 Good for Families?
Cloud 9 is suitable for all ages, though the atmosphere skews towards adults and couples rather than young families. There is no kids club or specific children's programming. Children are welcome and will enjoy the snorkelling and the water access, but the DJ sets and bar atmosphere make it feel more adult-oriented than a standard day cruise. Families with young children may prefer the Mamanuca Islands Day Cruise or Tivua Island, which have dedicated kids clubs and meke performances.
Full Day vs Half Day
The full day gives you 5–6 hours on the platform, departing at 9am and returning around 4–5pm. The half day departs at 1pm and returns around 5–6pm. The full day is better value — you get more time on the water and in the sun, and the extra morning hours before the afternoon half-day crowd arrives mean a quieter, more relaxed experience. If you're only in Fiji for a short trip, the half day still delivers the full Cloud 9 experience in a condensed format.
Tips for Cloud 9
- Grab a day bed as soon as you arrive — they're claimed quickly and make the experience significantly more comfortable.
- Bring your own snorkel mouthpiece if you have one. Snorkel masks are provided but the mouthpieces are shared.
- The bar tab of FJD $60 goes quickly on cocktails. If you're budget-conscious, beer and wine stretch further.
- No cash is accepted on the platform — card payments only for anything beyond the included bar tab.
- Wear water shoes if you have them. The platform can get hot and the coral is sharp.
